ALMOST DONE--I PROMISE!!!

Sorry guys--I promise I will try to be back on track next week. New year, new start--all that jazz. Plus, this draft is due like really, really soon. So soon I've set a kinda-feeling-impossible goal to type "the end" by tonight. Not sure if i'm going to make it. But I have to TRY.

So sadly, no MMGM. And I usually do an end of the year post looking back on all I've been through writing wise--and that is coming in a few days, too (I'm sure you're all holding your breath)

But for now I'm about 4 chapters away from DONE (well, done as in the draft is done. It will still be a mess and need lots of revision which I am trying very hard not to think about) so I have to keep working working working.

Hope everyone has an awesome week!

Going Dark

I know, it's supposed to be MMGM--and I've been TRYING to keep up with it. But alas, between being sick, going out of town for the weekend, and the ever impending deadline of doom (and the draft that's kicking my butt instead of cooperating for said deadline) I'm... taking the week off.

SORRY!

If you're wondering about next week I'm... not sure. I'm hoping to catch up this week and be back on track, but right now all I know is that I am BEHIND, so I have to drop everything and focus on getting this book finished.

Related to that--if you are one of the wonderful people who sent me an email or a FB message I promise, I will be reading and replying to those. But probably not until after January 2nd.

Sorry again--and thanks for bearing with me!

ALL THE THINGS (that... I keep forgetting to tell you about)

Hey--so, remember that time when I fell into the deadline cave and didn't blog or tell you guys about anything important for like a month???

Yeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaah. Oops.

(though hey, I did share the super-awesome widget for LET THE SKY FALL and host an ARC Giveaway. If you missed that, go HERE)

But never fear, I am going to catch you all up today in a chaotic, rapid-fire mass of information overload!!! You. Are. WELCOME!

Okay, so first: I AM OUT OF THE DEADLINE CAVE TODAY!!!

Yes--it's TRUE!!! I probably shouldn't be, because ... well... hitting this one is gonna be tight. But I couldn't pass up an opportunity to visit some amazing kids at an awesome school. And then tonight, I'll be at Barnes & Noble for a book fair. So if you live in the San Diego area--PLEASE COME!

Here's the deets:

When: TONIGHT
Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Where: Barnes & Noble Oceanside
2615 Vista Way Oceanside, CA 92054
760-529-0106

What's awesome about these book fair signings is that they're super casual. You just hang out whenever you want for as long as you want. So if you have any time between 6 and 8, come come come! I'll have swag! And awkward hugs! And we can talk about cats and cupcakes!!!!

(Who doesn't want to be a part of that???)

Also: KEEPER GOT AN AWESOME REVIEW FROM BOOKLIST!!!!!
"A large and varied cast of supporting characters and an intriguing premise contribute to make this an exciting start to a promising series." ~ Booklist Reviews
Yes, there was a lot of squealing and jumping around the house when my editor sent that. Trade reviews are SO SCARY. So YAY BOOKLIST!!!!

ALSO, also: LET THE SKY FALL SOLD TO TAIWAN!!!!!!!

I know--I couldn't believe it either. But here's the official PM listing to prove it:

It's SO crazy knowing my book is going to be in yet another language I can't read. My job is so cool sometimes!!!

ALSO ALSO also: (I told you, I have forgotten to tell you ALL THE THINGS): KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES IS GOING TO BE AN AUDIO BOOK!!!!!

(And dude, I cannot tell you how excited I am to hear my book read by a narrator. Talk about epic!!!)

I don't know when it will be released--the author is always the last to know these things. But the contract is signed and it is HAPPENING. Coming from Audible. I'll post more details as soon as I have them.

ALSO ALSO ALSO also: KEEPER HAS BEEN NOMINATED FOR A YABC Choice Award--and *I've* been nominated for favorite middle grade author. Now, obviously you don't HAVE to go vote for me. BUT... if you decide to I will pretty much love you forever. Plus everyone knows that when you vote for me or KEEPER a unicorn burps up a magical sparkly cupcake of awesome, and really, who doesn't want that to keep happening???) NO pressure, of course, but if you would like to vote, go HERE.

AND--last but not least--a special offer from me to you. See, last Saturday was Bring Your Kids To The Bookstore Day--and I'd planned a special way to reward people for participating by offering special swag packs to anyone who bought KEEPER. And... then I forgot to post about it.

I know.
Major #Shannonfail.

Halfway through the day I did finally remember and sprinted to Twitter and FB to get the word out--and a bunch of people did see and take me up on it. BUT, since then I've heard from some who were sorry they missed it.  And that's TOTALLY my bad. SO, I'm doing it again this weekend. (And hey, if you want to start it today, that's fine too.)

If you buy a copy of KEEPER between now and 11:59pm PST on 12/9/12, email me at SWMessenger (at) hotmail (dot) com with your mailing address and I will send you a special swag pack that includes shiny things like signed, personalized book plates and stickers and limited edition art prints. I don't need proof of purchase--I am willing to go on the honor system. And while of course it would be awesome if you supported your local Indie--it doesn't matter to me where you buy it.

Swag packs will go in the mail early next week--I promise--so you should definitely have them in time for any celebrationish things you need. And of course if you have any questions, ask away in the comments.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnd... I think that's everything. I mean, my brain is kinda shot these days, so it's possible I'm forgetting something. But that covers all the big stuff. Except to also add a huge THANK YOU to you guys for bearing with me through all my crazy deadlineishness. I promise, I WILL get things back on track soon. Once LET THE SKY FALL 2 quits kicking my butt and keeping me up half the night and otherwise making me very very aware that SEQUELS ARE HARD!!!

Ahem.

And now... back to drafting. Hope to see some of you tonight!!!!

Do you want to LET THE SKY FALL???? (Hint: there's a giveaway!)

Okay--don't go into shock, but I AM ACTUALLY POSTING ON MY BLOG. (I know, I know--I said don't go into shock!)

Sadly, this does not mean I'm out of the deadline cave. I'm still very much trapped in that dark, stressful place for at least another few weeks. But the good news is: I snuck out into the light because I have something SUPER AWESOME to share with you guys--and a contest too! (so you'll want to stick with me to the end of this post)

See, I don't know if you realize this, but LET THE SKY FALL is launching into the world in LESS THAN 100 DAYS!!!!

I know to some of you that might sound very far away--but trust me, that is SOON. Like holy crap, there aren't enough exclamation marks in the world to convey how soon that is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Personally, I'd been planning to commemorate the impending countdown to LTSF's launch with a panicky, exclamation mark filled post (hey, kinda like this one) wherein I stressed about ALL THE THINGS.

Fortunately though, the lovely people at S&S had something MUCH more awesome planned (this is why authors shouldn't be in charge of these things). And so, I give you: THE MOST SHINY AWESOME COUNTDOWN WIDGET I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Make sure you click the play button in the top right--THERE ARE WIND SOUND FX!!!!
(and if, for some reason, that isn't loading right on your screen, you can also find it HERE)

Equally exciting--or maybe even MORE SO--is that S&S has also built a super-awesome microsite for LET THE SKY FALL, which they will be adding all kinds of cool things to in the months to come. And to start off the fun, they have the first four chapters online for you to read. Click HERE to check that out.

You can also click HERE to add it to your Goodreads shelves and HERE to "like" LET THE SKY FALL on Facebook.

And of course this wouldn't be a proper celebration without a contest. SO I'M ALSO GIVING AWAY AN ARC OF LET THE SKY FALL!!!!!!!!!!

I want to make this really nice and easy for everyone (especially myself, given the whole DROWNING IN DEADLINES thing). So to enter all you have to do is leave a comment on this post by 11:59 pm pacific time on Saturday, December 8th. I'll draw one random winner and post their name on Sunday, December 9th. That's it--that's all you have to do. And international entries are welcome.

HOWEVER, I know some of you might wish there were a way to increase your chances of winning. So I will also give FIVE extra entries to anyone who posts the widget on their blog. I don't need a link--if you say you did it I trust you. But make sure you let me know that you did so I can give you your extra entries.

Ready?

Set?

GO!!!!!!!

ALL THE THINGS!

Wow--is it Friday already???? WHERE DID THE WEEK GO??????????

Oh wait, I know where my week went:

Those, my friends, are copyedits for KEEPER 2. A.k.a: the most tedious and tiring part of my job multiplied by the longest book I've ever written. End result = *flail* *whimper*

(you'll also note the boxes and empty bookshelves in the background. Yes, I moved, and still have yet to unpack pretty much ANYTHING. Except those flowers and placemats on the table, strangely enough. I mean really, who needs dishes and pots and pans when there are decorative accents? One must have priorities!)

I also had a school and store visit this week (so much fun! Though sooooo exhausting).

And... I'm still trying to crank out a TON of new words on LTSF 2 in order to make my starting-to-feel-impossible deadline.

None of which I'm telling you to complain. These are all very happy things. BUT, they are also very time consuming things so they kept me away from blogging and twitter and facebook and all the other ways I usually like to connect with you guys. And they will probably continue to keep me away for the majority of this month. SORRY.

I promise things will get back to normal (ish) soon and that I will catch up on email and mailings (if you're waiting on a prize I promise, it IS coming. As soon as I unearth it from the leaning tower of boxes). Thank you so so so so SO much for bearing with me in the meantime.

Also: I have been TOTALLY remiss in mentioning a super-awesome event I'll be at this Saturday. If you live in SoCal you DON'T want to miss out. It's called YA In the Sun and there are some seriously cool authors who will be there (plus one awkward, giggly blonde). Check out the list:

Josephine Angelini
Leigh Bardugo
Jennifer Bosworth
Jessica Brody
Debra Driza

Nancy Holder
Kirsten Hubbard
Suzanne Lazear
Marie Lu
Sarah Maas
Gretchen McNeil

Cindy Pon
Andrew Smith

I mean.... WOW, right? The universe seriously might explode from all that awesome. And there will be signings and LOTS of mix/mingle time, plus raffles and all kinds of other fun things (we even have a live band!) So if you live in SoCal COME HANG OUT WITH US. Here's the event details--hope to see you there!

ShaNoWriMo!!!

Sorry for the cheesy title guys--I *couldn't* resist. :)

But since it's Nov 1, and everyone has NaNo on the brain, I figured it was time to weigh in on whether I will be joining all the NaNoWriMo fun. And the answer is....

Sorta!

I will be doing some SERIOUS writing in November.  (In fact, I'm trying not to think about just how much writing I have to do, because it is a LOT.) I owe the sequel to LET THE SKY FALL rather soon, and with all the chaos of KEEPER's release I'm a *little* behind on my writing schedule.

But, that doesn't really count as NaNo-ing, because I'll be working on a book that I've already started (and thank goodness for that. *hugs the words that already exist, wishing there were more of them*). Plus, I'll be sending pages to CPs and revising as I go because well... I'd rather not send my lovely editor too hot of a mess.

So I will definitely be in the writing trenches, drafting like a madwoman all month, (and probably stressing and panicking on twitter). But I'm not *officially* NaNo-ing because I'm breaking a few too many rules (who knew I was a rebel?).

But I am happy to cheer you all on.

Go!

Write!

Win!!!!

(and send cupcakes and caffeine--I'm going to need them!!!)

I simply assemble the list based on the links that are emailed to me ahead of time

Launch Week Photos!

Wow--has it REALLY been more than 2 weeks since KEEPER released? Where does the time go????

Okay, well, so this post is RIDICULOUSLY overdue but... hey, better late than never, right?

First up--the So Cal Launch Party!!!!

I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by the turnout. This is really only about 1/2 the crowd--there were so many people! It was SO HARD not to cry! Especially since there were so many kids. Here's a group shot of just a few of them:

I'd done three school presentations earlier that day--and miraculously some of them came. Plus a bunch of local writer friends brought their kids.

AND an amazing teacher I'd met at the SCIBA events I've done came and brought a bunch of her students--many of whom had already read (and loved) KEEPER. They were pretty much the cutest things ever. Here's one of my favorite pictures, from before the event even started, when they surrounded my table to ask me questions. LOVE.

I tell you, getting to talk to kid readers makes all the stress and deadlines and exhausting travel soooooo worth it. It's hands down the best part of my job!

And I have to take a minute and give a HUGE shout out to the amazing ladies at the B&N where I did the launch. Not only did they run an AMAZING event, but they went so above and beyond! They'd made a special "Lost Cities" cafe menu:

And one had even come in costume, in a cape and gown like the Foxfire Mentors wear (she'd even changed her name tag to say Lady Barbara. I TOTALLY geeked out when I saw it)

(She's the one on the right. And on the left is a peek at the signing line. My hand actually got tired--best problem to have, EVER!) :)

From there I headed to Arizona, where I got to visit three amazing schools and um... scare them all with print-outs of some of the revision letters my agent sent me to get KEEPER ready to be shopped:

(this is the one I call the "Email of Doom")

And listen to an AWESOME teacher who'd read the entire ARC of KEEPER to his class read my favorite scene (He gave Keefe an Irish accent--it was pretty much the greatest thing EVER. I so want to to make Keefe Irish now!) :)

And... as if all of that weren't enough to put me into awesome overload, I also got to fulfill a longtime dream and do a signing and event at Changing Hands.

Not only is that store a big part of the reason KEEPER exists, BUT, I got to be introduced by Faith (aka: The Book Babe), who I am honored to now call my friend after she has inspired me so many ways

It's a MIRACLE I made it through without crying--and I almost lost it at one point, but found a way to rally though.

I could keep going. I have so many amazing pictures and memories of all the incredible people I met--some of whom I *know* because of this blog or twitter, some of whom I met for the first time. But this post is getting pretty long, so I'll stop for now and end with one more big, sparkly...

Glitter Gifs

To everyone who came to these events and supported me and KEEPER. (and to ALL of you who've bought it--or are planning to buy it or thinking about buying it or will tell your friends to buy it or might check it out from the library)

Launching a book is a very humbling and exciting thing, but it doesn't work very well if no one supports it. So THANK YOU SO MUCH. You all truly made launch week a dream come true!

My Cover's ALIVE!!! (AKA: The KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES BOOK TRAILER!)

I promise, I WILL have a full launch week update for you guys. I'm just still trying to track down pictures and organize my thoughts and, yanno, get my brain working again.

But in the meantime I have something AWESOME to share:

THE KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES TRAILER!!!!!

*jumps around*

*flails*

There's EPIC MUSIC!

And BLOWING HAIR!
(we all know how I feel about wind)

And a COOL FLASHY LIGHT THING!!!!

Are.

You.

Ready?!?!?!

You weren't ready, were you?

My work here is done.

*scrolls up to watch again*

OH--and if you missed it yesterday, I'm giving away a BUNCH of shiny signed + personalized bookplates. If you'd like to enter to win one make sure you go HERE.

A Keepsake for your KEEPER! (and yes, there's a giveaway!)

Now that my launch parties/pre-order campaigns are over, I've been getting emails from some of you wondering if there's still a way to get your hands on signed copies of KEEPER. And the good news is, there is!

Mrs. Nelsons Toys and Books, one of my favorite Indie Bookstores, had me sign a BUNCH of books when I stopped by last week, and you can order them online by clicking HERE. (Just make sure you specify that you want a SIGNED COPY in the notes. I'm pretty sure I've signed every copy in their store, but just in case, it's good to be clear.)

BUT, I also know that some of you lovely souls already bought my book from your favorite place. Or maybe you haven't yet, but you're going to! Either way, I know some of you might wish there were a way to have that copy signed.

Sadly, I can't teleport to you to personally sign it. But I actually have something better, since you get my signature AND I keep my shenanigans safely in California: SHINY SIGNED BOOKPLATES--which I can personalize and everything!!!!

Aren't they pretty? (and this picture really doesn't do them justice)

And of course I'm giving some away!!!

I haven't decided how many, since it depends on how many people enter. But I will try to pick as many as I can. And because I want to make this as easy as possible for you, I've created a handy dandy form. That way if you win I'll already have your address and can ship it off straight away without the additional: waiting-for-you-to-email-me-your-address step. I'm also not going to require that you send me a receipt or any sort of proof of purchase or anything, since I can't really imagine why you'd want a signed KEEPER bookplate if you have no copy of KEEPER to put it in. So I think we can just go on the honor system here.

To enter, fill out the form below by 11:59 pm pacific on Sunday, October 14th. I'll choose as many winners as I can and send off their bookplates the following week. International entries welcome!

And thank you guys so much for all the love and support for KEEPER. I can't tell me how much it means to know you're reading something I wrote. I just... I can't even... *sniff*

Also, I promise I will have launch party pictures and updates as soon as I get my act together!!

Okay, here's the form. Don't forget to fill it out!

It's HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've had more than a year to plan this post and find some meaningful, articulate way to express how it feels to watch my very first book launch into the world. But... I'm not sure the words exist. Either that or my brain is just far too loopy from all the craziness surrounding release.

Seriously though, it's a bizarre mix of emotions.

There's THE HAPPY that comes with seeing my book on store shelves, surrounded by so many other amazing books that I love and admire. There's THE HOPE that it will find its way into readers hands and hearts. And of course there's THE FEAR, which I am trying not to focus on.

But I think more than anything, there's THE GRATITUDE.

Not only does this book exist because of the help and guidance of MANY people (the KEEPER acknowledgements section is epic length!). But it also wouldn't exist without all of you. This blog was where the whole "trying to get published" thing became real. In fact, you guys were some of the first people who knew I'd gone back to writing. I met my Crit Partners here. And all of you have cheered me on through all the crazy ups and downs of this journey and kept me going.

I will never be able to thank you enough for all that you've done (and will do) to support me and my writing. So I will give you the only thing I can. KEEPER isn't *mine* anymore. From today on it's yours. And I really, REALLY hope you enjoy!

(and uh.... feel free to NOT tell me if you don't) :)

THANK YOU SO MUCH, EVERYONE!!!!

Since I can't hug all of you, I will hug the only thing I can!

Oh, and if you would like to read the first three chapters of KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES, you can do so HERE. There's also still time to pre-order the signed copies with the special swag and help support Kids Need to read by going HERE. And if you live in SoCal I hope I will be at the Oceanside B&N at 6:30 tonight for the Launch Party. There will be prizes and cupcakes and rambling--and I will probably get a bit emotional. Hope to see you there!

NOTE: I used to not have a cut-off time for adding links to the post, but with how insane my schedule is right now, if you don't email me by Sunday evening (usually around 11pm PST is when I put the links together) I can't guarantee I'll have a chance to add you. BUT, you are welcome to add your link in the comments on this post so people can find you!

*Please note: these posts are not a reflection of my own opinions on the books featured. Each blogger is responsible for their own MMGM content and I do not pre-screen posts ahead of time, nor do I control what books they choose. I simply assemble the list based on the links that are emailed to me ahead of time
